Swedish construction group Skanska has signed a $78 million contract amendment with an existing client for an education project in the western United States, adding to its US construction orders as it advances a school replacement scheduled for completion in 2029.

The amendment, equivalent to about SEK 730 million, will be included in US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026, the company said in an October 5 announcement. Work has already begun.

The project will replace an existing school on the same site. Skanska said the new building would expand opportunities for students and improve local infrastructure, but did not identify the client, school, city or state. It also did not disclose the original contract value or the total project cost.

An addition to existing US business

The agreement represents additional business within an established client relationship, rather than entry into a new US market. Its significance is the addition to Skanska’s US order book and its continuing workload in education construction, with delivery of the school extending to 2029.

The distinction between an amendment and a new standalone award matters: the $78 million is the value of the amendment, not a disclosed price for the entire school. Skanska did not explain which changes or additional work the amendment covers, leaving the full scope of the agreement unclear.

The announcement also separates the timing of disclosure from the booking period. Although released in early October, the amendment belongs to third-quarter US order bookings. That figure is an order intake measure, not a statement that the amount has already been recognised as revenue.

A separate school award in Washington

Skanska also announced a separate $110 million contract with Renton School District for a new Renton High School in Washington, according to an October 5 DPA report carried by Yahoo Finance. That award will likewise be included in third-quarter 2026 US order bookings, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2029.

The Renton project is a three-storey school with classroom capacity for 1,600 students. Its planned facilities include health and special services spaces, community areas, a library, a cafeteria, gymnasiums and sports fields. The disclosed location and specifications apply to Renton, not to the unnamed $78 million amendment.

A broader western US footprint

Skanska’s western US activity extends beyond education. Construction Equipment Guide reported in September that Skanska USA Civil West was carrying out improvements along roughly 11 miles of Interstate 15, beginning in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The work includes widening 33 bridges, roadway improvements, retaining walls and express-lane infrastructure.

That transport project has an expected cost of approximately $400 million and a 2028 completion date, with Coffman Specialties participating as Skanska’s joint-venture partner. Alongside the school contracts, it illustrates an established regional business serving both education and transport needs. The latest amendment builds on that presence, although the limited disclosure prevents a fuller assessment of its contribution to the underlying school project.
