Swedish construction group Skanska has signed an additional $60 million contract with Lee Health for work on a new hospital and medical office building in Fort Myers, Florida. Announced on October 2, the award expands an existing assignment rather than marking a new US market entry.

The contract, worth approximately SEK 560 million, will be included in Skanska’s US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026. The amendment adds interior build-out finishes and mechanical, electrical and plumbing work associated with the project’s West Bed Tower expansion.

A larger scope on a four-year build

The overall development comprises an approximately 416,000-square-foot, five-story hospital, a central energy plant and an approximately 125,000-square-foot medical office building. The office building will include an ambulatory surgery center, placing both hospital and outpatient surgical facilities within the broader project.

Construction began in June 2024 and is scheduled for completion in May 2028. The newly announced work therefore adds to a project already more than two years into construction. Skanska did not disclose the full project contract value or the number of hospital beds in the announcement, so the $60 million award should not be read as the cost of the entire development.

The distinction between the additional scope and the full development is important: the latest award concerns specified finishes and building systems for the West Bed Tower expansion, while the overall assignment spans the hospital, energy plant and medical office building. The release gives no separate completion date for the added work.

Scaling through an existing US assignment

For Skanska, the commercial significance lies in securing more work within an established US customer relationship. The amendment increases the value of its Lee Health assignment without a separately announced new project. It illustrates a route to US growth through expanded scope on a long-running construction contract, rather than through an acquisition or a new office opening.

The award also comes against a stronger reported financial backdrop for the group. A September 28 report by Ad Hoc News put Skanska’s second-quarter 2026 revenue at SEK 48.03 billion. Citing the company’s investor update, it reported a rolling 12-month operating margin of 4.3% in Construction.

That report also cited market analysis identifying US construction as a key driver for Skanska, while highlighting higher interest rates and a weak US office market as risks. The Fort Myers award adds healthcare construction work to that picture, although the announcement does not quantify its effect on the group’s sector mix or profitability.

The immediate financial milestone is its inclusion in third-quarter US order bookings—not an announced contribution to quarterly revenue or profit. Delivery remains tied to the wider project schedule, with completion targeted for May 2028.
