Skanska wins $136m rail improvement contract in northeastern US
The Swedish construction group adds a public-sector rail project running through December 2029 to its established US operations.

Swedish construction and project development group Skanska has signed a $136 million contract with a public client for railroad improvements in the northeastern United States, adding a multi-year infrastructure assignment to its US business.
The company announced the award on October 9, 2026, valuing it at approximately SEK 1.3 billion. Work has already begun, and completion is expected in December 2029. Skanska said the contract would be included in its US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.
The announcement did not identify the client, state, rail corridor or detailed construction scope. It also did not specify whether the improvements concern passenger or freight operations, leaving the project's place within the region's transport network unclear.
More work for an established US business
For Skanska, the award represents additional work in an existing market rather than a US market entry. The group operates across selected markets in the Nordics, Europe and the United States. Company background published by citybiz puts its 2025 group revenue at $18.3 billion and its workforce at 25,900.
The strategic significance is the addition of a public-sector infrastructure contract with a delivery timetable extending through late 2029. Alongside recently announced education projects, it illustrates the range of US work Skanska is securing across transport and institutional construction, rather than an expansion dependent on a single project type.
The disclosed figure is an order-booking amount, not a schedule of revenue to be earned during construction. Skanska provided no project margin, annual revenue allocation or procurement details, so the announcement does not establish the contract's profitability or how the company competed for the award.
Education contracts provide a broader US backdrop
Earlier in the same week, Skanska announced a separate $110 million contract with Renton School District to build a new high school in Renton, Washington, according to DPA reporting carried by Yahoo Finance. That award will also be included in third-quarter 2026 US order bookings, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2029.
The Renton project involves a three-storey school with classroom capacity for 1,600 students. The planned campus includes health and special services spaces, a library, cafeteria, gymnasiums and sports fields. It provides another example of a US public-client assignment extending into 2029, although it is separate from the northeastern rail contract.
On October 7, citybiz also reported Skanska's selection for construction and renovation work at the University of Mary Washington's Fredericksburg campus in Virginia. That project includes a new 68,230-square-foot theatre building with a 293-seat performance hall, 82,000 square feet of renovations to existing fine arts buildings and an 8,950-square-foot addition.
The university work will be phased to maintain department operations during construction. The same report said Skanska USA Building had more than $1 billion in projects in progress across its Mid-Atlantic region, operating from a regional headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. That figure concerns the building operation and should not be treated as a measure of the newly announced rail work.
Together, the announcements show a European contractor adding assignments across an established US platform. For the railroad project specifically, the firm commitments disclosed so far are its $136 million value, work already under way and a December 2029 completion target; the underlying transport improvements remain unspecified.
