British Wellness Brands Land in Walmart’s New Mood & Mind Set

Walmart is creating dedicated shelf space for mood-focused functional drinks, with British brands TRIP and Neutonic among the European names already securing U.S. mass-market distribution.

Walmart is giving mood its own place in the beverage aisle, and British wellness brands are already among the companies winning space in the new category.

The U.S. retailer has launched a dedicated Mood & Mind beverage set designed around different cognitive and emotional need states throughout the day, including calm, focus, productivity, relaxation and winding down. Rather than grouping every functional drink under traditional categories such as energy drinks, soda or supplements, Walmart is increasingly merchandising products around how consumers want to feel.

Two British-founded businesses are already part of that shift. London-born calming brand TRIP has been selected for the new assortment, while functional beverage company Neutonic is expanding into nearly 1,000 Walmart stores across the United States through the Mood & Mind set.

Walmart turns mood into a retail category

Walmart describes Mood & Mind as a destination for emerging and trending beverages covering mood, relaxation, social and cognitive need states. The move follows the retailer's development of its Modern Soda assortment and comes as functional beverages expand beyond the traditional energy category.

Brian Salmon, vice president of beverage at Walmart U.S., said the retailer built Mood & Mind around the different moments and mindsets customers are shopping for. That includes everything from finding calm and focus during the workday to winding down in the evening.

The distinction matters for emerging brands. A product positioned around relaxation or cognitive performance previously risked sitting awkwardly between the soda aisle, supplements and conventional energy drinks. Walmart is now giving those products a dedicated physical destination inside one of America's largest retail networks.

According to data cited in TRIP's announcement, calming and mood-support drinks are now the fastest-growing functional benefit in beverages and are growing nearly three times faster than protein. The retailer's decision to formalize the segment suggests the trend has moved beyond specialist wellness stores and direct-to-consumer audiences.

TRIP moves deeper into U.S. mass retail

TRIP was founded in London in 2019 by Olivia Ferdi and Daniel Khoury and built its identity around products designed for calm and everyday wellbeing. Its presence in Walmart has now expanded beyond a conventional product listing.

The British brand is represented across three Walmart merchandising sets: the new Mood & Mind destination, the ambient beverage aisle through singles and multipacks, and Walmart's refrigerated New & Noteworthy set, where six TRIP SKUs are being carried.

Walmart specifically highlighted TRIP's role in the developing category. Salmon described the brand as a natural addition to the assortment because of the consumer following it has built around calm.

For TRIP, the expansion represents more than additional U.S. distribution. A British brand that developed around a relatively new wellness proposition is now being used by the world's largest retailer as part of the architecture of an emerging American beverage category.

Neutonic enters nearly 1,000 Walmart stores

Neutonic represents another side of the same trend. Co-founded by Chris Williamson, James Smith, Luke Betts and Shan Hanif, the British business focuses on productivity and cognitive performance rather than primarily on relaxation.

The company announced on October 1 that it is expanding into nearly 1,000 Walmart locations across the U.S., its largest retail expansion to date. The rollout includes four drink flavours, refreshed packaging and a new four-pack assortment.

Neutonic's inclusion also shows why Walmart's Mood & Mind concept is broader than a relaxation shelf. The brand's zero-sugar functional drink is positioned around focus, productivity and everyday performance, with ingredients including caffeine, L-theanine, citicoline, Alpha GPC and Panax ginseng.

TRIP and Neutonic therefore occupy different ends of the same emerging retail spectrum: one focused heavily on slowing down, the other on switching on.

From online audiences to American shelves

The two British brands also reflect a changing route into American mass retail. Both developed distinctive consumer identities and large digital audiences before reaching this level of physical distribution.

TRIP has turned calm into a lifestyle-led consumer proposition, while Neutonic benefits from the audiences surrounding co-founders Chris Williamson and James Smith. Williamson's Modern Wisdom podcast has surpassed one billion downloads, giving the brand a distribution advantage long before a shopper encounters it on a Walmart shelf.

What Walmart adds is physical scale. Digital demand and social visibility can help a European challenger establish itself in America, but national retail distribution places the product in front of mainstream consumers who may never have encountered the brand online.

Part of a wider Walmart wellness push

Mood & Mind also fits into a broader effort by Walmart to make newer wellness categories more accessible to mainstream shoppers. In July, the company said it was introducing more than 150 wellness-focused Rollbacks across categories including protein, vitamins, supplements and active lifestyles.

Walmart has also introduced Wellness Minis in 2,000 stores and online, giving customers lower-cost ways to trial emerging wellness products before buying larger formats.

Taken together, these initiatives suggest Walmart is increasingly treating wellness not as one aisle but as a consumer behaviour that can influence multiple areas of the store.

What this means for European companies

The important signal for European consumer companies is not simply that two British brands have secured Walmart distribution. It is that new U.S. retail categories are still being created, giving challengers an opportunity to enter before the competitive landscape becomes fixed.

European wellness businesses do not necessarily have to beat established American brands inside mature categories. In areas such as functional beverages, gut health, mood, sleep and cognitive performance, they can arrive while retailers themselves are still defining where products belong and how consumers shop for them.

TRIP illustrates that opportunity particularly well. What began as a British wellness proposition now sits at the heart of a new Walmart beverage set. Neutonic, meanwhile, is translating a digitally driven British functional brand into nearly 1,000 physical U.S. stores.

For European brands looking at America, that makes Walmart's Mood & Mind experiment worth watching. If the set develops into a durable retail category, it could become an important landing zone for the next generation of European wellness companies scaling into the U.S.
